Software Engineer Resume: Example, Skills and Projects
Updated
A software engineer resume should usually fit on one page, with skills grouped by languages, frameworks and tools, then experience written as impact: what you built, with which stack, and what changed in speed, cost, users or reliability. Add a GitHub or portfolio link and, if you are junior, two or three strong projects.
What to include on a software engineer resume
- Contact details: name, phone, professional email, city and state, and a LinkedIn URL if it is up to date. No photo, date of birth or other personal details: US employers don’t expect them.
- A professional summary of two or three sentences.
- Work experience, most recent first, with bullet points that show results, not just duties.
- Links: GitHub, portfolio or personal site next to your contact details. Pin clean repositories with a README.
- Technical skills grouped by type: Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud/DevOps, Tools.
- Projects, especially for junior engineers and career changers: what you built, the stack and a link.
- Education: degree, bootcamp or self-taught path, and certifications only when they matter for the role.
Recruiters search their ATS by technology. Write each one the way the posting does (“TypeScript”, “PostgreSQL”, “AWS Lambda”) and only list what you could discuss in a technical interview.
Sample professional summary
Backend engineer with 4 years building Python and Go services for a B2B SaaS platform. Designed REST and event-driven APIs on AWS, improved test coverage and on-call reliability, and mentored two junior engineers. Looking for a backend or platform role on a product team.
The summary is optional for engineers. It earns its place when you are changing stacks, moving into a new domain or coming from another career, because it explains the move before the reader has to guess.
How to describe your experience
Under each job, write three to five bullets that start with an action verb and say what changed because of your work. The numbers below are examples: use your own.
WeakWorked on the payments API.
BetterRebuilt the payments API in Go, cutting p95 latency from 800 ms to 180 ms and handling twice the peak traffic on the same servers.
WeakWrote unit tests.
BetterRaised test coverage of the billing service from 35% to 80% and added CI checks, which reduced production rollbacks over two quarters.
WeakHelped migrate to the cloud.
BetterMigrated 12 services from on-premises VMs to AWS ECS with Terraform, lowering monthly infrastructure cost by about a fifth.
WeakBuilt features for the mobile app.
BetterShipped offline mode for a React Native app used by 40,000 field technicians, the most requested feature in support tickets.
If you don’t have exact figures, describe the result without one, or use a range you could explain in an interview.
Skills to list on a software engineer resume
- Languages, for example Python, Java, TypeScript, Go or C#
- Frameworks: React, Node.js, Spring Boot, Django, .NET
- Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis
- Cloud and DevOps: AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD
- Practices: testing, code review, system design, monitoring and observability
- Collaboration: design docs, working with product and design, mentoring
Education and certifications
- A degree in computer science, software engineering or a related field, if you have one. Many employers also hire from bootcamps or self-taught paths backed by solid projects.
- No license is required to work as a software engineer in the US.
- Cloud certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud can help for cloud, DevOps and consulting roles. Use the exact certification name and year.
- Open-source contributions, hackathons and technical talks fit in a Projects or Additional section.
How to present a project
Treat a project like a job: a name, the stack, a link and two or three bullets about what it does and what was hard. One finished, deployed project with tests says more than five tutorials.
Budget Tracker — React, Node.js, PostgreSQL · github.com/yourname/budget-tracker
Built a full-stack app that imports bank CSV files and categorizes spending with user-defined rules.
Wrote 60 integration tests and set up a GitHub Actions pipeline that deploys on every merge to main.
Frequently asked questions
Should a software engineer resume be one page?
Yes for most people with under about ten years of experience. Senior and staff engineers with several relevant roles can use two pages, as long as the strongest work is on the first.
Should I list every technology I have used?
No. List what you could discuss confidently and what matches the job. A long list of tools you touched once dilutes the ones you know well.
What if I can’t share numbers from my company?
Use approximate or relative figures (“about a third faster”, “for a team of 50”) or describe scale without confidential data: users served, services owned, size of the codebase.
Do I need a cover letter for software jobs?
Often it is optional, but a short note helps when you are changing careers, relocating or applying to a small company where a person reads every application.
