Sales Associate Resume: Example, Skills and Achievements

Updated

A sales associate resume should prove you help customers and sell: sales against goal, add-on items, loyalty or credit card sign-ups and customer feedback. Add the type of store, POS systems, merchandising and inventory tasks, and your availability. For a seasonal or first job, lead with people skills and reliability.

What to include on a sales associate resume

  1. Contact details: name, phone, professional email, city and state, and a LinkedIn URL if it is up to date. No photo, date of birth or other personal details: US employers don’t expect them.
  2. A professional summary of two or three sentences.
  3. Work experience, most recent first, with bullet points that show results, not just duties.
  4. Type of store and products for each job: apparel, electronics, home goods, beauty, sporting goods.
  5. Sales results: personal or team sales against goal, units per transaction, add-ons and sign-ups.
  6. Store operations: merchandising, replenishment, fitting rooms, opening and closing, buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS) orders.

Retail managers want people who sell and keep the floor running. Balance your bullets: one or two about sales, one about customers, one about operations such as stocking, merchandising or inventory.

Frequently asked questions

Sales associate or retail associate: which title should I use?

Use the title your employer used, and mirror the posting in your summary. Stores use both terms for very similar jobs.

How do I show sales if my store didn’t track individual numbers?

Use team results you contributed to, sign-ups, customer compliments or recognition such as Employee of the Month, and explain what you did to get there.

Is seasonal work worth listing?

Yes. Write “Seasonal Sales Associate” with the months, and say if you were asked to stay on after the season. That shows reliability.
